Power Generation
power-generation

There are thousands of power plants in New England, some only large enough to power one building; others provide enough energy to light 10,000 homes. But, all of them need the benefits of our expertise with hydraulic, pneumatic, electro-mechanical and instrumentation technologies. Whether it's fuel nozzles, burners, scavenge pumps, bleed air valves, servo valves, tube fittings, stainless steel hose, filtration, accumulators or sealing products, we have the experienced technical staff ready to keep those power plants running efficiently.

Fluid Handling Solutions Improve
System Life and Emissions Compliance

Today, the demands placed on existing and planned Power Generation facilities continue to increase as the demand for more energy from businesses and consumers increases. At the same time, the demand for cleaner, more efficient use of fossil fuels increases, which adds to the complexity of operating modern power plants. In response to the growing demands for efficient power, The Hope Group, in partnership with Parker, has created motion and control solutions for applications that range from coal handling to emissions monitoring and everything in between. Our expertise with fluid handling system solutions extends to improving system life, increasing safety, elimination of wasted time and cost, and improved emissions compliance.

Mercury Emission Reduction

For example, coal-fired power plant owners are working hard to find ways to reduce EPA-mandated mercury emissions. The key to this challenge is accurate, reliable, and cost-effective mercury-monitoring bundles such as Parker's Multitube umbilicals. Consisting of multiple long lengths of pure fluoropolymer tubing wrapped together with high-temperature heating elements, Multitube umbilicals are used to extract stack gas from a probe located at the top of a smoke stack. The umbilical transports the gas by vacuuming it down to a mercury analyzer, where its mercury content can be verified.
This is a classic example of a system solution designed to help power plant operators meet their critical operation requirements. There are many other examples of how Parker components and engineered system solutions from The Hope Group can solve power plant operator challenges.

Oil Monitoring Systems

Oil monitoring and conditioning systems for steam turbine lubrication and hydraulic systems maintain plant equipment and improve system life. Parker offers a wide array of on-line monitors and monitoring systems for fluids and gasses and off-line sample monitoring for water and petroleum-based fluids, which help assure process quality, optimize equipment performance, and extend component life.

An exciting new development in monitoring equipment is the Parker Icount PD (particle detector). It represents the most up to date technology in solid particle detection. It is designed to work effectively for the mobile, power generation, industrial and maintenance fluid environments. The design dynamics, attention to detail and compactness of the permanently mounted, on-line particle detector module, combines with on-board, laser-based, leading edge technology, to bring to market a remarkably cost effective fluid management and contamination control solution.

Non-Metallic Expansion Joints

Expansion joints manage air and gas handling systems in conventional power plants, such as coal, oil and gas-fired; and combined cycle and gas turbine power plants. Non-metallic expansion joints, fabricated from synthetic elastomers, fabrics, fluoroplastics, and insulation materials, are flexible connectors designed to provide stress relief in ducting systems by absorbing movement caused by thermal changes. They also act as vibration isolators, shock absorbers and in some instances to make up for minor misalignments of adjoining ducting or equipment. The expansion joints offered by Parker are engineered and constructed to help manage thermal expansion, noise reduction, vibration, wind and seismic loads, movement absorption, and system stress relief.

Some of the characteristics of non-metallic expansion joints are increased flexibility, ability to take torsion, noise reduction and vibration isolation. Fabric expansion joints move in any direction, axially, laterally and rotationally on X, Y, and Z axes, while metal only moves either laterally or axially. Fabric joints also absorb twisting movements caused by differential heating of ducting. Fabric expansion joints isolate vibration and prevent sound transmission between ducting sections because metal to metal contact is eliminated.

Working together with Parker, The Hope Group is well positioned to provide fluid system solutions for hydraulic, air, or high-temperature steam systems. The range of Parker solutions includes oil and monitoring systems, abrasion-resistant CERGOM 10 hose, nitrogen generators, steam control and instrument racks, high-pressure pumping systems, continuous emission monitoring systems, and expansion joints.
