What do hydraulic accumulators do?

Accumulators store pressurized hydraulic fluid and release it as needed to maintain consistent pump flow and pressure. A hydraulic pump raises system pressure and forces fluid to enter the accumulator. The piston or bladder moves and compresses the nitrogen gas volume because pressure of the fluid exceeds the precharge pressure. This is where the stored energy comes from. Valves control oil flow in and out. 

When system and gas pressures are balanced, the movement stops. Hydraulic system pressure falls and the accumulator releases the stored, pressurized fluid to the hydraulic circuit when a something downstream such as actuator movement creates system demand. When movement stops, the charging cycle begins again. Accumulator charging kits help check, adjust and fill nitrogen into hydraulic accumulators.

Hydraulic accumulators compensate for changes in fluid such as thermal expansion in the system as well as leaks. They also reduce vibration and shock, which can disrupt flow to or from the pump.
